I would highly recommend authors who have ACTUALLY put in years of effort researching their books, such as the rightfully acclaimed Jim Collins although also subject to the same hindsight biases but far more thorough and thoughtfulMichael Porter, Clayton Christensen on techinstead of this work, which seems based on very shallow analysis and is full of sweeping generalizations.

It focuses on sustainable competitive advantages which are only two of five forces that Porter mentions. I have learnt a lot from this book. See all Editorial Reviews. I would rank this book amongst the top 5 business strategy books that I have read. Despite the title, the book seems aimed more at investors than managers.
I highly recommend this book. It was, I think, the first book I read on competitive advantages. A simple framework focuses your attention, let’s you filter out the noise, and zoom in on the pertinent. Personally, like Warren Buffett, I am somewhat skeptical to the long-term story when the current excess returns are a function of patents.
The first half of the book introduces this idea via case compettiion indicating the sources of barriers to entry and thus competitive advantage and the strategic analysis process that one should undergo to identify the existence of barriers to entry.
I would’ve enjoyed a section of insights on when to exit an unprofitable business line versus attempt to operate at a higher level of efficiency.
Im greemwald unimpressed by the analytical framework presented, and wish the book would’ve sticked to more economically important ideas, and not try to predict the future and drag all opinions to absolute conclusions. Without being certain the company got some of the sustainable competitive advantages in this book, I never add any value for growth to earnings power value i.
In order to identify and manage such factors, he develops an extremely logical and practical framework for thinking about strategy — but as the title indicates: It feels like Greenwald threw it in because his publisher wanted a longer book.
I expect it to be helpful in my job as a consultant to customers as well as my internal management role. I loved the chapter on Nintendo and the lasts chapter are really good. After reading this, we ought to be more afraid of compeyition expanding into new markets.
They’re trying to give insight into the business-cases presented from an investors standpoint, but fail time and time again. In addition, I understand his position that a strong brand is not a competitive advantage – it must be coupled with barriers to entry, economies of scale or something else.
