For while providing the substance of life for themselves and their families, men and women are performing their activities in a way which appropriately benefits society. With great respect, therefore, this council regards all the true, good and just elements inherent in the very wide variety of institutions which the human race has established for itself and constantly continues to establish.
As a result many persons are quite aggressively demanding those benefits of which with vivid awareness they judge themselves to be deprived either through injustice or unequal distribution. These peoples, especially those among them who are attached to older traditions, are simultaneously undergoing a movement toward more mature and personal exercise of liberty. Indeed love itself impels the disciples of Christ to speak the saving truth to all men. Since all these things are so, the modern world shows itself at once powerful and weak, capable of the noblest deeds or the foulest; before it lies the path to freedom or to slavery, to progress or retreat, to brotherhood or hatred.
It will never be profaned by adultery or divorce. For God has willed that man remain “under the control of his own decisions,” 12 so that he can seek his Creator spontaneously, and come freely to utter and blissful perfection through loyalty to Him.
