High Druid of Shannara: Jarka Ruus

Pen is an Ohmsford, and he isn’t much different from the Ohmsford heroes of old from all of the previous books. Brooks handles the two plot lines effortlessly, never letting us grow tired of one before switching back to the other. I had forgotten why I normally stay away from this genre when I picked this up, because a it sounded really interesting, and b it didn’t have “Book 1” attached to the title, which is normally a dead give-away that the book will end in a cliff-hanger and leave you wondering what happens next.

Jarka Ruus is, in essence, an escape and evasion harka that takes place in the middle of the usual jrka quest. In addition, I felt like there was a lot of filler in this book. Her nephew, Pen Ohsmford, inherent of a unique magic of his own, is the only one who can save her. Of course the new Omsford boy is awesome as well and all of the new characters mesh really well. Even so, the airships serve as a convenient plot element to help the characters get around the world more quickly.

I think I’m done with Terry Brooks. Peace and harmony among the races of the four lands seems a distant, faint hope as her enemies on the council, the dissenting druids led by Shadea a’Rhu, refuse to accept the reality of Grianne’s redemption and plot to bring her down, each striving to achieve their own ends and bring their own agenda to completion. I thought it was mediocre by Terry Brooks’ standards.

May 10, Bende Zsuzsanna rated it it was amazing. The Tanequil is sentient, it is a living, breathing creature ruud will only give up a limb only if it is persuaded of the need for doing so and must act freely because if it is taken by force, the magic that it bears will be destroyed. Even Grianne’s few allies–chief among them her trusted servant Tagwen–know of the plots against her.

Not only do they recrute Ahren but Ahren’s niece Khyber who wants to be a Druid and have a different life from her families.

There are times when this goes on for a page or two, with the character just thinking about their situation, how they got there, and what they should do next. View Full Version of PW.

This isn’t a bad thing because I really love Grianne and hope for her to get that redemption that she needs. Try the Kindle edition and experience these great reading features: At the same time, the author’s explainations of what has gone before are more than adequate so that I don’t feel too lost.

Grianne Ohmsford, struggling with the inner demons of her former evil life as the Ilse Witch, also wrestles with the politics of her new role as Ard Rhys, High Druid of Paranor, responsible for the unification of the third Druid Council.

Pen Ohmsford is descended from the line of Jerle Shannara, the first of the Elven Kings, but his own magic seems small and inadequate when measured against that of his aunt’s enemies, who will stop at nothing to thwart Pen’s efforts to rescue his aunt and restore the nascent Druid Council.

For being the first in a harka, Jarka Ruus still has an ending and answers many questions to the mysteries that were brought up in the beginning; Brooks knows where he is taking ruux story. If your looking for a book to kill some time this summer, pickup this copy ASAP!

He uses just the right combination of old and new to season the book without overpowering it. Such was the destiny foretold for her by the Druid, Walker Boh. I typically like fantasy, but I didn’t like how the characters explained what they had to do a million times.

Book One of High Druid of Shannara invites both the faithful longtime reader and the curious newcomer to take the first step on the next extraordinary quest.

Notice I said storyteller, not writer. It was all setup. Continuing the adventure Jarks been reading about the four lands for more years than I wish to remember; it never grows stale, characters still remain fresh, believable and engaging.
